If you are diagnosed with AVN (avascular necrosis) caused by prednisone, please go to the FDA link below and report the complication. FDA’s main role is to level the playing field among drug and device manufacturers, not to protect patients. No regulation stops doctors from exceeding recommended doses or durations of treatment. However, if patients report steroid-induced AVN, this activism may be a first step toward a required change in labeling. Drug labels could warn doctors that patients should be cautioned about this complication, offered blood testing to assess susceptibility, and monitored with routine MRI (magnetic resonance imaging), in order to detect early signs of bone death. AVN is treatable in its early stages. It need not progress to total joint destruction.
