Surgeons for PAO (periacetabular
osteotomy)
This
information is for adult patients
with CHD / DDH (congenital hip dysplasia /
developmental dysplasia of the hip). The list is arranged geographically,
West-to-East Coast, USA. CHD / DDH is a
developmental disorder; consequently, many of these surgeons also specialize in
pediatric hips.
The
names in the first section came from the office of Reinhold Ganz,
in Zurich, Switzerland (formerly in Bern), who personally trained these
particular surgeons. Dr. Ganz has answered a query from Hip Universe as follows:
Hip U.: “Can
you give us some guidelines about what size caseload would constitute solid
experience in PAO--that is, how many cases per year?”
Dr. Ganz: “Solid experience in indicating [identifying]
and executing PAO needs about 25 cases per year.”
Sincerely,
R.Ganz

Early
results of the Bernese periacetabular
osteotomy: the learning curve at an academic medical
center.
Peters
CL, Erickson JA, Hines JL.
"…Nine of the ten major complications and all
four of the failed osteotomies occurred in the first
thirty hips in which the index procedure was performed...The occurrence of
complications demonstrates a substantial learning curve."
The
names in the second section are from other sources, but everyone here has been
recommended personally by at least one patient at the Totally Hip internet
bulletin board, Hip Universe Support Group, Hip Women, or by another surgeon on
the list. Comments made by patients are
included, but some have no name attached (an oversight).
Please
note that the websites of Drs. Matta and Mast contain
good educational information for patients.
Patients
outside the U.S. may want to contact one of these surgeons for a referral
closer to home.

"I
had an excellent experience with him. There weren't any complications, he was
very open to my questions, didn't talk down to me but didn't use too fancy
medical jargon either." — Keitha Gamble
“My 23-year-old daughter is about 9 weeks post-PAO,
and, as she is currently living at home, my husband and I have gone through the
whole experience with her. Dr. Downer is
not only an excellent Ganz-trained surgeon, he is
caring and compassionate, an excellent listener, and has a superior support
staff. Joint preservation is one of his specialties. We would highly recommend
him.” — Ann R.
“I had PAO surgery with Dr. Downer in June 2008 and

The x-rays are so good, he is very happy with the results. I can't say enough or be thankful enough for
all that Dr. Matta and his staff have done for
